When You Don’t Know How to Pray For Your Kids

with No Comments

As parents, we know the greatest gift we can give our kids is to pray for them. But, sometimes the circumstances feel so intense we’re at a loss to know how to pray for them. In my own parenting journey there have been several times when I’ve felt at a complete loss to know what or how to pray. For me, I needed tangible things to pray for my kids ( and still do even though they are adults). One tool that I have used over and over again is to pray through the book of Ephesians for my kids and grandkids. The book of Ephesians is loaded with theology so don’t get tripped up on the theology – just pray the truths over your child.

Here are some examples. Start with these and then write some of your own. Put your son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, or grandchild’s name in the blank.

I praise You God my Father for sending the Lord Jesus Christ! Lord, You have set _________________________apart to be holy and blameless in your sight. You loved her before the foundation of the earth! Take ______________________________ deeper into knowing Your love and grace. I pray that today, she would experience Your lavish love and grace in her life. If she feels forgotten by You today, remind her of your rich extravagant love. Ephesians 1:1-8

Lord, I praise You that You offer ____________________________________ wisdom . I pray that You would through the power of Your Holy Spirit give greater wisdom and understanding about Your will for his life. Help his eyes to be opened to Your presence and let him experience the hope of what You have planned for His future. Thank You that the power of Your indwelling Spirit is available to him. Help Him to understand that through the Holy Spirit’s power he is able to do anything You call him to do. The very same power that raised Jesus from the dead is constantly available to him. Thank You, Holy One! Ephesians 1:17-19

Lord Jesus, I praise You that _________________________________________ is Your workmanship – Your beautiful exquisite masterpiece! Thank You , that even though sometimes I feel baffled as a parent, You are not confused or overwhelmed by my child. You understand her far better than I ever will! I praise You that You have ordained specific good works for her to do in Your name. Help me to become a student of my child so I understand better her unique design. As she grows and steps into her calling in Your kingdom, give her great joy! Ephesians 2:10

I praise You, Lord Jesus that You are able to do immeasurably more than all I can ask or imagine in _____________________________________’s life. Thank You, that when I feel worried over ____________________________________ I can trust that You are at work. Your plans for _________________________________ exceed any I could come up with. I pray that Your name would be honored in _______________________________’s life today and that your honor would flow to the next generation.   All glory and honor belongs to You! Help me to rest in that truth today. Ephesians 3:20-21
