What’s Your Wall?

Climbing walls aren’t for me. I have height fright and no desire to see how high I can climb. I think, “Why? Why, on earth would I torture myself like that?” I have had similar feelings when facing a new challenge.

Perhaps you’re similar. You look at a new challenge and you’re filled with hesitancy. Whatever the challenge, it looms large like a giant wall. Maybe it’s raising a special needs child, or stepping into a new career. Perhaps it’s facing an unexpected physical challenge or paying off financial debt. Whatever the situation, your soul screams, “I can’t!”

The Psalmist David faced many challenges both personally and as King of Israel. He wrote, “With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall” (Psalm 18:29). What gave David that kind of confidence? I believe the answer is given later in the very same Psalm where David declares, “It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights” (Psalm 18:32).  David nurtured his confidence in God by reminding himself often that it was God who would empower him

This Psalm reminds me of a story found in the Gospel of Luke where Jesus calls the disciples. Luke tells the story, writing that Jesus, “Called the twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:1-2). I love these verses and have them underlined in my Bible. Why? Because these verses remind me that God equips and empowers me for what’s ahead.

Here’s the thing, God often calls me to tasks bigger than myself.  Sometimes, when I look at what He’s calling me to do, it looks like a giant wall.  The wall might be a difficult relationship. The wall might be a new ministry venture. The wall might be financial difficulty.  But here’s the thing: when the wall feels insurmountable, my immediate reaction is fear, and my initial self-talk screams, “I can’t.”  But there’s no “I can’t” in God’s kingdom. The Holy Spirit invites me to lay aside my fear and change my self-talk. He challenges me to shout in triumph by faith, “Through you, I can!”

Friend, you need to know that the Lord Himself has given you the power and authority to handle the assignment in front of you! The circumstances may look insurmountable, but the power He’s given you is indescribable. He has given you the power and the authority of the Holy Spirit. As you take each new assignment and you trust Him for the strength to do it, Jesus is glorified, and more people learn about His amazing love. Your calling in life isn’t just about you. It’s actually an assignment God has given so that His kingdom can advance. Lean into Him. Celebrate His power and authority. Ask daily, “Lord, how can I join you today in making yourself known to the world around me?” It’s a prayer He loves to answer.

Lord, as I face the challenges in front of me, fill me with your Spirit. Help me to remember that you have given me the authority and the power for every assignment in my life. No wall is too high, and no troop is too large for you! As I seek to join you today in what you are doing in the world around me, I lean into you for strength, wisdom, equipping, and anointing. Help me to walk boldly into this day knowing that all I need, you will provide. May my heart echo the words of David: “The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior!” (Psalm 18:46).

So, what’s your wall?  However high or impossible it might look, God promises that he’ll help you scale it!
