What Does It Look Like to Flourish in This Season of Your Life?

At a recent leadership retreat I hosted in my home for a group of women I coach, we had a discussion about flourishing. I asked them to consider this question: What does it look like for you to flourish?

I’d like to ask you the same question.

How would you answer? Are you thriving or merely surviving?

What season of life are you in? Are you raising children, building a career, caring for aging parents, grieving a loss, slowing down, or enjoying retirement? No matter what season you are in, there is one truth you can hold onto:

God wants you to flourish.

What Does It Mean to Flourish?

The psalmist wrote:

“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God.”
Psalm 92:12–13

A palm tree can live for around 200 years, and some cedar trees can survive for thousands of years! Don’t worry—I’m not suggesting that you live for 3,000 years. However, the longevity of these trees speaks to endurance—endurance through every season of life.

God’s desire is not simply that we survive difficult seasons, but that we remain deeply rooted, continually growing, and fruitful through them all.

What Does It Look Like to Flourish in Your Season?

Commit to Being Deeply Rooted

A flourishing life is a life deeply rooted in God’s Word. As you meditate on Scripture, you will discover the wisdom, strength, and guidance you need for every season.

If you struggle to find time to read God’s Word, listen to it. Let it soak into your mind and heart. If you want your life to flourish, follow the paths God has outlined in Scripture.

Continue to Grow and Develop

A flourishing life is always growing. Don’t allow yourself to become stagnant. Keep learning, exploring, and developing.

May I ask you: When was the last time you learned something new?

If you want to flourish, keep studying God’s Word, but also consider learning a new skill. Take a watercolor class, explore a new area of technology, read a great book, learn to play an instrument, try a new hobby, or discover how to take better photos on your phone. Stay committed to personal growth.

One powerful way to keep growing is to spend a few moments considering your dreams. What have you always dreamed of doing that you haven’t yet pursued?

Ask God to nurture those dreams and energize you to dream with Him. Dreams are often gifts from God, so step confidently into the desires He has placed in your heart.

Cultivate Spiritual Fruit

As you grow in your relationship with Christ, you will bear fruit. Jesus promised this in John 15:8.

Spend time with Him and ask what fruit He wants to develop in your life. Meditate on the fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22–23. Then listen for the gentle prompting of the Holy Spirit. Is there a particular fruit that needs strengthening?

Bring your will into alignment with His, and ask Him for opportunities to cultivate that fruit. It is a prayer He loves to answer.

Flourishing doesn’t happen by accident. It happens as we stay rooted in God, continue to grow, and allow His Spirit to shape us.

No matter what season you are in today, God’s desire is that you flourish.
