He is my Abba, Father
“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you
A slave to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.
And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father”
Romans 8:15
I know so many who have suffered deep father wounds, including me. Jesus said, “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish will give him a snake?” (Matthew 7:9) Some of our earthly fathers gave us the stone of emotional coldness, or biting criticism or abuse. What we longed for as children was love and nurture. God created us that way. For those of us who lacked those gifts growing up there is good news! God longs to be your Abba, Father. The word Abba, is the New Testament equivalent of “Daddy” in our English language.
Your Abba, Father is;
- Compassionate (Luke 15:20)
- Loving (Ephesians 3: 16-19))
- Affectionate (Luke 15:20)
- Extravagant (I John 3:1)
- Patient (2 Peter 3:9)
- Nurturing (Excited to meet your needs) (Matthew 6:32)
- Delighted with you (Zephaniah 3:17)
Praise Challenge:
Today in your praise time focus on God being your Abba, Father. Make a list of the characteristics of your earthly father. Then make a list of the characteristics of your heavenly father. Even if your earthly father possessed many wonderful qualities the attributes of your heavenly father are far superior. After you have completed your list spend time praising God for who He is as your father. Address Him intimately as “My Father” then praise Him for His love. Throughout the day remind yourself that you are God’s beloved child. He is as pleased with you as He is His own son. Live today with the full assurance that you are God’s precious beloved child.
