Standing Still vs. Diving in to Help

Miracles. Signs of God’s wonder. The Israelites had seen God accomplish more than they ever could have imagined as God tormented Pharaoh with the plagues. Finally, Pharaoh let God’s people go – in fact he demanded that they leave.  Freedom finally!!   But then as the Israelites were camped out on the banks of the Red Sea they heard a terrible noise in the distance. Pharaoh and his armies had decided to chase them down. God’s people did what we all do – they panicked!  (Exodus 13:10) How do you handle those moments of panic? Maybe it’s your financial situation, or an illness you can’t beat, or the job you desire, or the child you’ve been praying for, but the situation seems hopeless.  When your in a hopeless situation what do you do? Often we dive in to help God out. Moses speaks these words to the people of Israel, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today……The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” (Exodus 13:13-14) Some translations read, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (NIV) God wanted HIs people to trust HIm. To know that no matter how dire the situation appeared, He would show up! This same God calls us to trust HIm today.

The question that comes to mind is, when do you remain still and when do you dive into action? Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Maybe stillness always proceeds action. What are your thoughts?  I’d love to hear!
