As you look at the week stretching out before you, what challenge are you are facing this week? Maybe it’s a project at work, a decision regarding one of your children, or connecting more intimately with your spouse. Maybe it’s getting organized, meeting a deadline, or trying to piece together an insane schedule.
This morning, I spent some time reading and reflecting on Mark 6:45-52. The disciples were in a boat stuck in the middle of a lake. As Jesus watched from the shore He saw them “straining at the oars” – rowing hard, getting nowhere. Ever been there? I sure have. You try your hardest to solve a problem or meet a deadline, but though you are giving it your best shot, it’s just not enough. Rather then experiencing success and victory, you succumb to discouragement and defeat. I wonder if that’s the way the disciples felt?
Jesus walks out on the water and actually almost passes them on the lake. Did He not see them? No. He knew exactly where they were! I think He wanted to give them an opportunity to invite Him into their problem. When the disciples saw Jesus, their imaginations got the best of them and they thought He was a ghost and started screaming. Jesus re-assures them, tells them it’s Him and that they don’t need to be afraid. Then He gets into the boat with them. The wind grows calm and they continue on across the lake.
I find in this little story a couple of tiny lessons for you and I. When life’s problems loom large, don’t let your imagination get the best of you and assume the worst. Instead, remind yourself of the truth that Jesus is ever present and always available. Invite Him into your situation and praise Him that He will give you the wisdom you need to accomplish all he has called you to do. Praise Him that He has all authority over every situation and relationship in your life. As you praise Him, I’m betting you are going to find your self calmer and more easily able to carry on. Why don’t you try that this week?
I’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment and tell me what scripture brings you comfort and re-assurance when you are facing a challenge? I’ll be giving away another copy of The 30 Day Praise Challenge. Last week’s blog winners were Julie and Kristi! Each of them won a free copy of The 30 Day Praise Challenge.
