Ever feel inadequate? I sure do! Last night I was with a group of friends. The sharing was rich and deep as each of us came to the conclusion that we are inadequate for the tasks God has called us to do. Think about your life. Where do you feel inadequate? Perhaps as a parent, I mean is there any task more daunting? Perhaps in your marriage. Perhaps in your career. Perhaps in your service in your local church or community. Inadequacy plagues us all and it certainly must have troubled the disciples of Jesus. In John 14 and 15 we are privy to quiet conversations Jesus had with his disciples preparing them for the fact that He would soon be leaving them and yet would call them to change the world with the message of His gospel. That’s a pretty daunting task, don’t ya think? Jesus understood the demands and challenges HIs followers would face and so He bolsters their courage and builds their confidence by:
1. Reassuring them that He will return. Jesus told HIs disciples, don’t be afraid. I know I’m going away but I will return and bring you to where I am for all eternity. (John 14:1-3
2. Promising them the Holy Spirit. What an amazing gift Jesus promised! He promised that after He left He would send the Holy Spirit to counsel them and lead them into all truth. (John 14:16-17)
3. Encouraging them to remain him Him and trust Him to do the work through them. (John 15:1-7)
As I look at these three promises, my courage is bolstered and my confidence is built because I realize that no matter what I face, I am never alone. I have the Holy Spirit indwelling me. No matter what God calls me to He promises that if I abide in Him He will do the work through me and make my life fruitful. As you face the challenges of your life – remember these three principles. They are pretty easy, He’s coming back, You have the Holy Spirit, You will bear lots of fruit if you remain in Him!
I would love to hear from you. How have you experienced the presence and power of Christ in your inadequate moments? Leave a comment!
