How to Find Happiness in January
Many people seem to struggle in January. I mean, it’s dark and often very cold, prompting people to stay home.
Just this morning, I woke up early and spent significant time with Jesus, and then realized it was almost 7 a.m., and it was still fairly dark outside. Anyone with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is bound to struggle. Unfortunately, many well-meaning Christians have convinced us that we don’t need to feel happy. But as I read Scripture, I see God inviting us to joy and gladness quite often!
In case you feel skeptical, here are three examples:
Psalm 51:8, “Let me hear joy and gladness.”
Psalm 118:24, “The LORD has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.”
Isaiah 35:10, “They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.”
Here’s the truth, Friend: God wants you to find joy and happiness.

So, during the dark, cold month of January, how do you find happiness?
Delight in Jesus. Find ways to be intentional this January about delighting in Jesus. Psalm 37:4 promises, “Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” The key is to truly delight in Jesus. Talk to Him throughout your day. Thank Him for everything—the little things and the big things. Gratitude is key to happiness! The more you delight in Him, the happier you will be! A new song I’ve been listening to in my time with Jesus is “Jesus Be the Name” by Elevation Worship featuring Tiffany Hudson.
Take a social media break. Scrolling is not helping you find happiness. In fact, it’s likely robbing you of happiness. Research shows that scrolling has increased discontent and comparison. One way to take a break is to choose one day a week where you will not go on social media. Start there, and you may find you are so peaceful that you want to increase to two days.
Connect with a friend at least three times per week. We need our friends! Those who have friends are happier. So take initiative and reach out. Call a friend and pray together on the phone, go out for coffee, or invite a friend to lunch. Your life will feel happier if you feel connected!
Friend, I’m praying for you. January is a cold month where many wrestle with depression, but I believe you can experience happiness with a few intentional steps. Delight in Jesus this month, take a social media break, and reach out to friends! Who knows? This could be the happiest month of the year for you!
