Hope When Heaven Is Silent
Have you ever prayed for something for a long time, and yet heaven feels silent? I think we’ve all been there a time or two.
This past week, I was reading in Revelation 8:1–4. There, John tells us that in his vision, when the seventh seal was opened, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. John goes on to write:
“And I saw seven angels who stood before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.”
As I have meditated on those verses, I’ve been intrigued. Most Bible scholars I’ve read believe that the half hour of silence—a holy hush in heaven—was in anticipation of God’s great judgment. However, during that holy silence, an angel approaches the throne with a dish of all the prayers of all God’s people. This would imply the prayers of many generations. In the Holy Hush, God listens to the cries of His people. Those prayers are then hurled at the earth. They become activated, bringing God’s will to earth.
I find tucked within this passage three hopeful principles for times when it seems your prayers are not being answered.

3 Hope-Filled Principles for Your Prayer Life
First, God hears. He listens. He cares about the cries of your heart. All your prayers come before His throne. Often, we may pray for wrongs to be made right or for vindication when falsely accused. Friend, let me assure you, God hears those pleas, and He brings justice for His people. Just as God felt the suffering of His people in the book of Exodus, He also feels your suffering. Hang in there. Your prayers are heard, and God will eventually bring perfect justice to the earth.
Second, God’s timing is perfect. At exactly the right moment, God will answer. You may not see all the answers to your prayers; some answers may come after you are long gone. But rest assured, at the right time, God will answer. Our timing is different than God’s. It’s hard to wait. However, as the Alpha and Omega, God holds all of eternity in His hands. At the exact right moment, He will answer.
Third, God honors perseverance. I know it can feel discouraging when you have prayed for years about a particular thing, and it feels like there hasn’t been a change. But may I encourage you? You don’t know what’s happening in heaven. God is moving, and at the right time, your prayers will be hurled at the earth to accomplish God’s will. Hang in there. Know that as you persevere, Jesus Himself is praying for you (Romans 8:34).
I hope these thoughts from Revelation 8 have encouraged your heart this week. Often, we are unaware of what’s happening in heaven while we groan here on earth. Rest assured, God is for you! He is listening to your prayers.
