Have you Evaluated Your Life Lately?

with 4 Comments

It’s the beginning of a new Month and I will have a milestone birthday at the end of this month. The beginning of a new month, new season, or birthdays are great times to pause and take inventory of your life. I want to intentionally live my life for the sole purpose of glorifying Jesus Christ. If I intentionally take inventory it helps me stay focused on my end goal.

I think it’s a good idea for you to take inventory as well. Consider, how is your walk with God? What’s God doing in your life? Is your passion still strong or have you become complacent? Here are a few scriptures and questions that I like to use when taking inventory:

David wrote, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24). These verses prompt me to consider:

  • Am I feeling anxious about anything?
  • What would it look like for me to release my worries to God?
  • Is there any pattern in my life that is offensive to others? (For example, do I give unsolicited advice? Do I interrupt others? Do I gossip? Do I come across as though I’m scolding others?)

The Apostle Paul wrote, “Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways: we do not use deception, nor do we distort the Word of God” (2 Corinthians 4:2). Based on Paul’s words, I ask myself these four questions:

  • Do I engage in behavior that I hide from others?
  • Do I feel ashamed about something I am doing?
  • Do I twist the truth to cover my actions?
  • Do I distort scripture to make it more “culturally relevant”?

Paul also wrote, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

  • Am I doing the works that God designed me to do?
  • Are there dreams in my heart that have lay dormant for too long?
  • What will I do this week to take action to fulfill a dream that God has placed in my heart?

I hope this little inventory check-list is helpful for you. It is for me. I’d love to hear from you. What question do you ask yourself to take inventory? How has taking inventory in the past helped you to stay focused and live a life of integrity?

Great questions, Becky. Not necessarily comfortable–but needed to keep us walking transparently with ourselves and God!

Thanks, Poppy! Yes walking transparently with ourselves and God is what we long for but sometimes we find it challenging to be honest with ourselves.

I’m delighted to find your blog post, Becky, in my inbox 🙂 I’ve been planning for March and April to be a time I reorder my surroundings, business day, and the way I care for myself. So a nice, timely place to start. After finishing 9 novellas in the last 2.5 years, and being in the midst of getting my degree in genealogical studies, I need a time to focus on setting things to order and a little personal evaluation of space and time. The biggest reason? I have left my dreams dormant for too long while answering to the dreams of others. So that’s why I’d planned for a systematic reordering. But, I had to finish commitments first to both be a person of integrity and to be able to release anything that distracted me from the commitment and, then once done, the ability to design what this next season of life would look like.
