7 Promises of Hope
Terror and destruction had ravaged Jerusalem after the Babylonian takeover. The people were in despair, and their national identity had been shattered. This was the backstory to Jeremiah 31.
Yet, in this mess, God speaks through the prophet Jeremiah to bring hope. Though in Israel’s case God had brought judgment in the form of captivity, He had not forgotten His people. As I’ve been considering Jeremiah 31 over the past week, I believe it has some promises for us today.
Why don’t you open your Bible and take a look while you read this?

I have loved you with an everlasting love. (Jeremiah 31:3). While this promise of reassurance was spoken to the survivors of the invasion, it is also spoken over you and me today. God’s love never fails! He has loved you with an everlasting love! His love will never change. You can’t do more to earn more, and you can’t sin so greatly that He’ll stop loving you. He surrounds you with everlasting love!
I will build you up again. (Jeremiah 31:4). God is in the business of restoration. You might feel torn down, but when you yield all that to God, He promises to restore and revive you. He brings beauty from ashes (Isaiah 61:1–3).
I will lead them beside streams of water on level paths where they will not stumble. (Jeremiah 31:9). This echoes Psalm 23, where David writes, “He leads me beside quiet waters for His name’s sake” (Psalm 23:2). Water speaks to refreshment. Though life may be hard, God promises refreshment for those who seek Him.
I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy. (Jeremiah 31:13). It is so good to remember that seasons of mourning don’t last forever. Comfort and joy will come again.
I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint. (Jeremiah 31:25). Are you weary? Does life feel hard right now? I have good news for you. God promises He will refresh and revive you. But you must press into Him.
I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. (Jeremiah 31:33). Ah, do you want a new mindset? The best way to get that is to ask God to write His laws on your heart. He promises He will do that. You only need to ask.
I will be their God and they will be my people. (Jeremiah 31:33). What a picture of secure attachment and belonging. This promise is for you! Because He has loved you with an everlasting love, you can belong to Him. He will be your God, and you will be His child. You need only to say yes to this promise! Oh, friend, claim this promise as your own. Rest in the security of knowing that you belong to God Himself. Nothing can separate you from His love!
As I reflect on the recent weeks of tragedy around the globe, I am deeply thankful for these promises. Why not print them out? When you feel overwhelmed by the news and the amount of evil in our world, remind yourself of these seven great promises.
