3 Prayers to Pray Over Your Friends

Prayer is a central element of my friendships. I enjoy praying for those I love, both family and friends.

For you, that might be a new concept, and you might not be sure how to get started. As I was reading and meditating on Psalm 90 this week, I realized again what a great scripture it is to incorporate into your prayers for both your friends and your family. After all, you can’t go wrong praying scripture.

Psalm 90 is written by Moses, one of the most humble men in all of scripture. We can borrow his words with confidence because we know he had a deep heart for God.

3 Prayers to Pray Over Your Friends

Pray that they would be given wisdom to order their days. Moses prayed, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). All of us have busy and complicated lives. We need the wisdom to know what to prioritize each day. As you think of your different friends, pray that God will give them wisdom for what and who to prioritize. Pray that they would order their days accordingly, knowing when to say yes and when to say no. God promises to give wisdom to those who ask, so pray that if they’re unsure, they will learn to go to God for wisdom.

Pray that they would be fully assured and satisfied with the love of God. Moses prayed, “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days” (Psalm 90:14). What a great prayer to pray! Many of your friends might know the love of God in their heads, but do they feel His love in their hearts? Do they live their lives fully present to God’s love? I want that in my own life, and I also want each of my family and friends to have that. I want them to be completely assured and satisfied with the love of God. If they are completely immersed in God’s love, they will be less likely to run after lesser loves. They will be less likely to veg out with common substitutes or chase after cheap thrills. Instead, they’ll be able to live life confidently with a sense of deep belonging.

Pray that the favor of God would rest on their endeavors. Moses prayed, “May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands” (Psalm 90:17). Let me ask you a question: Do you know what your friends are working on? Do you know what is near and dear to their hearts? Do you know about their concerns, whether for a work project, parenting, or marriage? Pray that as they work at whatever lies before them, God would bless their efforts.

Wanna be a better friend? Incorporate prayer into the picture. Use Psalm 90 to get started and begin to intentionally cover your friends in prayer.
